Swim Instruction Expertise for Laguna Beach
In Laguna Beach and neighboring seaside communities in Orange County, Blue Buoy Family Swim Center is your time-tested provider for world-class, family-oriented swim instruction. Since the 1950s, we’ve kept our many students focused and motivated with a unique blend of teaching expertise and positive reinforcement. With classes for adult learners and children of all ages, we make it easy to get started on the lifelong adventure of casual or competitive swimming.
Our Classes
Parent & Me – Children can benefit from swimming lessons at a surprisingly early age. However, some young ones may feel temporarily overwhelmed by the newness of the pool environment. And in some cases, the parents of young kids may share these concerns. Our Parent & Me classes enhance the learning experience and help put everyone at ease by allowing parents of children under the age of three to join their kids in the pool for each lesson.
Semi-Private and Private – The semi-private classes at Blue Buoy combine the advantages of shared learning with personalized instruction that allows for plenty of individual attention. Each of these classes pairs two children with one instructor. We find that this small setting enhances teaching opportunities while encouraging collaboration among all participants.
Our private swim classes bring an even higher level of attention to the needs of each participant. Self-motivated students can use this focused environment to make faster gains in swimming skill or reach specific personal objectives. A private setting can also provide significant benefits for students with special abilities who may feel a bit lost in larger classes.
Stroke Prep – Stroke prep is the perfect option for school-age swimmers who have developed some skills, but lack exposure to one or more of the four standard strokes swum in competition. A 6:1 student/teacher ratio strikes a right balance between individual focus and group participation. To take part, your child must understand the mechanics of at least two of the competition strokes.
Stroke Technique – Students who enroll in our stroke technique classes are well-versed in the basics of swimming, but need further refinement to maximize their abilities in each of the four competition strokes. Instructors at this level also teach all participants how to improve their pool performance by improving their stamina and conditioning. A 15:1 student/teacher ratio helps make stroke technique both instructive and lively.
Adult – Many strong adult swimmers first entered the pool when they were young children or teenagers. However, there are also plenty of skilled swimmers who developed their abilities later in life. Blue Buoy’s adult beginner classes aim to make learning how to swim as easy as possible for the older set. In addition to providing expert instruction, we focus on creating a pleasant environment that fosters an interactive experience among participants.
Even when adults learn how to swim at an early age, they may choose to seek out additional instruction for many reasons. For example, competitive swimmers may return to the pool for the help needed to improve their race performances. Casual swimmers may seek help to improve their comfort level in the water or gain the confidence that comes with learning new skills. Whatever your motivations, our advanced adult classes will provide the vital support needed to reach your goals.
Dedicated, Experienced Swim Instruction
At Blue Buoy, we understand that swim instruction must take place in a safe setting that emphasizes high standards for all staff members. With this in mind, we require all prospective instructors to undergo a detailed hiring process that includes:
- Checks on all relevant areas of personal background
- Checks for demonstrated swimming proficiency
- An assessment of teaching abilities
- Verification of up-to-date First Aid and CPR certifications
In addition, all of our instructors must be at least 19 years of age.
After completing their interviews, checks, and assessments, all new staff members take part in Blue Buoy’s in-house training program, designed to familiarize them with our cooperative, caring teaching methods. We find that instructors who make it through this rigorous process often remain on staff for years, providing a steady influence for younger and older swimmers.
First-Rate Facilities
A swim school’s physical surroundings also set the tone for a positive experience in the pool. Simply put, quality facilities provide the resources needed to make students comfortable and help instructors work at their peak abilities. At Blue Buoy, our facilities feature two main pools: one for young swimmers who do best in small-scale surroundings, and one for older swimmers who need room to stretch out and swim longer distances. We reinforce your comfort with stabilized temperatures both in and out of the pool.
Flexible Scheduling
Experienced swimmers know that consistency is one of the keys to developing fundamental and advanced skills. This means that it’s important to attend your scheduled lessons as often as possible. However, we know that, even with the best intentions, you sometimes may not make it to class. To help you keep moving forward in these situations, we make our many types of courses available at several different times a day. In addition, you can take your class on another day before your instructor moves on to new topics.
