Our Classes

Parent & Me Classes – While you may understand the many benefits of getting your children into the water at an early age, you may also fear the stress that comes with the introduction to such an unfamiliar environment. With the help of our Parent & Me classes, you can ease your concerns by accompanying your child under the age of three in the pool during each lesson. This approach also allows you to share in a unique bonding experience.

Semi-Private  and Private Classes – A semi-private class, with just two students for one instructor, is often an excellent option for providing your child with personalized guidance and focus. At the same time, the lack of distractions allows your child to work closely with the second student while sharing and practicing swimming techniques. We also find that the small class size fosters the development of strong social connections.

A private class provides an even greater opportunity for guidance and personalized instruction. This one-on-one setting may be especially beneficial for children who need to work on specific training objectives. It can also serve as an excellent format for instructing children with special abilities, who may need extra attention to thrive to their fullest potential.

Stroke Prep Classes – School-age children participate in Stroke Prep when they want to gain familiarity with all four classic competition swim strokes (i.e., the butterfly, breaststroke, freestyle and backstroke). Prerequisites include general comfort in a swimming environment and previous experience with two or more of the competition strokes. A 6:1 student/instructor ratio helps the class retain a personalized touch. Successful completion serves as a qualification for the next level of instruction (Stroke Technique).

Stroke Technique Classes – To take part in Stroke Technique, your child must have demonstrated skill in each of the competition strokes (through Stroke Prep participation or some other source of instruction). The class focuses on the development of exemplary stroke performance, as well as development of sufficient physical conditioning to support this level of performance. Sessions are limited to 15 students.

Adult Swim Classes – Swimming is an excellent form of recreation and exercise for people of all ages. And lack of experience as a child in no way disqualifies you from jumping in the pool as an adult. When you’re ready, just sign up for one of our beginner classes for adults.

We also feature classes for another group of adults: people who already have at least some prior experience and want to solidify their skills or develop a higher degree of mastery. Whether you have specific training objectives (e.g., participation in a triathlon) or just want to learn how to maneuver safely in the pool or ocean, you’ll find the help you need here. Each class is small enough to promote individualized instruction.

Expert Swim Instruction

Additional baseline qualifications include CPR and First Aid certification, the ability to pass extensive background checks and a demonstrated aptitude for teaching children and adults. In combination with our high rate of staff retention, this process helps ensure that all of our clients get to work with truly top-notch instructors over the full duration of their Blue Buoy experience.

Excellent Facilities

In order to produce its maximum benefits, swim instruction must take place in a setting that promotes safety and good results. At our Tustin facilities, we provide just such a setting. A shallow, enclosed pool serves as the instruction location for our youngest students. Older children and adults receive training in a larger, deeper pool designed to accommodate bigger bodies and classes. Swimmers in both pools enjoy water kept at a comfortable 90 F to 93 F. In addition, temperature-controlled decks help ease the environmental transition into and out of the water.

Scheduling Flexibility

This means attending class regularly. However, given the hectic pace of daily life, even dedicated students can end up missing a class or two. Blue Buoy strives to accommodate these attendance hiccups by offering classes with a built-in level of scheduling flexibility. In addition, when you don’t have the time to reschedule a class in a given week, you can use our lenient absence policies to make new instruction arrangements and get back on track within a reasonable window of time.
