Swim Instruction Expertise Serving the City of Cypress

In the City of Cypress, your number one choice for quality swim instruction is Blue Buoy Swim School. For six decades and counting, we’ve offered Orange County the very best in casual and competitive training for both children and adults. With a focus on positive feedback and a mutual learning experience, we make it easy to get in the water at any age. Whether you’re learning new skills or refining old ones, we work hard to assure your success.

Our Classes

Parent & Me Classes – While young children clearly benefit from learning how to swim, they may instinctively fear the unfamiliar environment of a swimming pool. And when parents see their children’s initial reactions, they may also feel the same instinctive fear. Our Parent & Me Classes are specifically designed to help children under the age of three (and their parents!) ease their worries and experience a positive introduction to swimming. Parents accompany their children in the water and share the adventure firsthand.

Semi-Private and Private Classes – With a fixed ratio of two students to one teacher, our semi-private swim lessons allow plenty of time for personalized instruction. At the same time, they give the participants the opportunity to share their developing skills. As an added benefit, we find that the small-scale environment frequently encourages lasting friendships between our students.

Each of our one-to-one private classes provides the ultimate in personalized swim instruction. You may decide on this highly focused setting if your child wants to swim competitively or needs to fulfill a specific objective such as the requirements for a Scouting badge. Private instruction can also provide the extra attention needed to help children with special abilities maximize their potential as swimmers.

Stroke Prep Classes – Stroke Prep is our approach to teaching children who want to learn each of the primary strokes performed in swimming competitions. To enter this class, which features a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, each student must have at least some background in two of these four strokes (freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke). Completion of this level serves as qualification for enrollment in the more advanced Stroke Technique classes.

Stroke Technique Classes – As our most advanced children’s class, Stroke Technique is designed to help students truly master each of the competition strokes. To qualify for this level of training, your child must complete Stroke Prep or otherwise demonstrate sufficient swimming skill. Along with facilitating advanced ability, this class (which features a 15:1 student-teacher ratio) helps all participants substantially improve their stamina and conditioning.

Adult Swim Classes – If you never developed swimming skill in childhood, you may feel that you’ve missed out on a major opportunity for exercise and recreation. Our adult beginner swim classes restore that opportunity and help you learn the basic mechanics of swimming in a friendly, respectful setting. In addition, they provide you with an excellent chance to interact with other class participants and share your learning experience.

Adults who already have previous swimming experience may want or need to boost their skills to a higher level. Our advanced adult classes are designed with these swimmers in mind. If you like, you can focus on improving your core abilities so you can maximize your options for recreation and exercise. You can also focus specifically on developing the skills needed to safely swim in a triathlon or any other competitive event.

Expert Swim Instruction

Blue Buoy is thoroughly committed to upholding the very highest standards for children’s and adults’ swim instruction. We demonstrate this commitment by subjecting each potential member of our staff to an extensive testing and verification procedure. Key elements of this procedure include background checks, confirmation of current CPR and First Aid certification and completion of our in-house master swimmer’s review. In addition, all of our instructors must be age 19 or older, possess a demonstrated aptitude for teaching and complete training in our unique, positive reinforcement-oriented approach. Candidates who meet these rigorous requirements frequently remain members of our staff for many years.

Excellent Facilities

At Blue Buoy, we match our commitment to top-quality swim instruction with advanced facilities that support effective learning. We maintain two pools and divide our swimmers between them. The youngest swimmers get the benefits of our enclosed small pool, which features a four-foot deep end and reassuring overall dimensions. Older children and adults take classes in our much larger second pool, which has an eight-foot deep end and lots of room for maneuvering. At all times, we maintain comfortable temperatures in the pools themselves, as well as in the environment surrounding the swimming area.

Flexible Scheduling

The best way to make steady gains in swimming skill is to attend class regularly. However, we know that children and adults often have scheduling conflicts that can make it difficult to pick one time for lessons and stick to it consistently. To deal effectively with potential conflicts, we maintain a flexible schedule for all levels of instruction and offer classes at various times throughout the day. In addition, when you can’t make it to class at all in any given week, you can make up your absence during a sizable grace period.

Dedicated to Cypress and All of Orange County

The City of Cypress lies at the western edge of Orange County next door to Long Beach in neighboring Los Angeles County. Its history is steeped in California’s dairy industry and the presence of artesian wells account for the community’s two earlier names: Dairy City and Waterville. Local residents and visitors alike flock to the horse races at Cypress’ Los Alamitos Race Course. Residents and visitors also enjoy close proximity to two of Southern California’s most famous and beloved amusement parks: Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland. In addition, Cypress serves as home to several major businesses, including Mitsubishi Motors North America and Vans.

Blue Buoy Swim School is located southeast of Cypress in the City of Tustin. For more than 60 years, we’ve taught generations of Orange County’s children and adults the joys of swimming in a safe, family-focused environment. Some of our program graduates remain recreational swimmers for life. Others choose a more competitive path, and our roster of alumni includes both Olympians and world champions. No matter your reasons for taking up swimming, you’ll find the same emphasis on positive instruction, skill development and plain old fun.
