Swim Instruction Expertise for the City of Laguna Hills
In Laguna Hills and surrounding communities, Blue Buoy Family Swim School is the recognized leader in expert swim instruction. For more than 60 years, we’ve helped the children of Orange County develop their physical, mental and social skills while learning essential and advanced swimming techniques. We’ve also helped local adults become first-time swimmers or improve upon their existing poolside skills. Whether you’re a competitor or a recreational enthusiast, our staff of friendly professionals will help you learn in an environment that stresses fun, safety, and collaborative effort.
Our Classes
Parent & Me – Our Parent & Me classes provide an important first step in swim instruction for children under the age of three. By allowing you to accompany your child in the water, we achieve two goals. First, your child will feel more comfortable while entering an unfamiliar environment. At the same time, you’ll feel more secure knowing you’ll be in the pool for the start of this new swimming adventure.
Semi-Private and Private – Blue Buoy’s semi-private classes are designed to combine the benefits of shared swimming experience with the advantages of personalized instruction. In every class, two students are guided by a single instructor. This student/teacher ratio maximizes the opportunity to learn the basics in a collaborative environment.
Our private classes provide an even tighter focus on the needs of the individual swimmer. We find that this focus is especially crucial for motivated students who want to reach a particular goal or level of proficiency. It’s also essential for students with special abilities who have the motivation to learn but may not reach their potential in a larger group.
Stroke Prep – School-age swimmers can use our stroke preparation classes to develop their ability to participate in all four standard types of swimming races. Children seeking enrollment at this level should already have some experience working in the pool with an instructor. Enrollees should also understand the basics of at least two of the four competition strokes. We maintain a 6:1 student/teacher ratio for each stroke prep class.
Stroke Technique – Stroke technique is the logical follow-up to stroke prep. At this level, students who know how to perform the four competition strokes work to improve their technique and refine their abilities. They also learn how to condition their bodies for improved swimming performance. The student/teacher ratio for stroke technique classes is 15:1.
Adult – As a rule, young children have the least difficult time learning how to swim. However, this doesn’t mean that adults unfamiliar with swimming are left out of the fun! Our beginning adult classes are specifically designed to help older swimmers learn how to adapt to the water in a safe, comfortable setting. Sharing the pool with other beginners also adds an element of informal social interaction.
Not all adults seeking swim instruction are new to the pool. In fact, many adults have previous experience but want to improve their existing abilities. The motivation for improvement may be purely recreational. However, many adults have specific, ambitious swimming goals in mind. Blue Buoy’s advanced adult classes accommodate both types of swimmers with the needed level of support and instruction.
Experienced, Dedicated Swim Instruction
Children and adults get the most out of swim instruction when their teachers meet rigorous standards of knowledge and ability. That’s why Blue Buoy has always focused on employing the best possible instructors for our many classes. Each member of our in-pool staff undergoes an extensive vetting process that includes:
- Background checks
- Swimming proficiency checks
- A review of teaching skills and aptitude
- Proof of CPR certification
- Proof of First Aid certification
- A minimum age requirement (age 19 or older)
Once this process is complete, each new hire participants in our custom-designed training program, which emphasizes a supportive, cooperative approach to swim instruction. After completing this training, many staff members stay with us for extended periods of time, ensuring a high level of continuity for our student swimmers.
Excellent Facilities
Like instruction, facility quality has a major impact on the odds that swim students will get the most from their classes. At Blue Buoy, we support all of our students with age-appropriate pool sizes. Young children learn in a small pool that helps minimize the uncertainty of entering an unfamiliar environment. Older children and adults learn in a larger, deeper pool that can accommodate bigger classes and bigger people. In and out of the water, we maintain comfortable temperature settings at all times.
Flexible Scheduling
Experience has taught us that consistent class attendance also plays a vital role in successful swim instruction. However, if you’re like most people, you sometimes have a hard time maintaining a regular household schedule. There’s a good chance you or your children will miss an occasional swim class. To help you stay on track, we offer classes at multiple times throughout the typical day. We also provide you with a window of time to catch up on any classes you may have missed.
Committed to Laguna Hills and Orange County
Laguna Hills is a city of 31,000-plus located in southeast Orange County. Like the neighboring communities of Laguna Woods and Laguna Niguel, the municipality gets its name from nearby Laguna Beach and Laguna Canyon. The roots of Laguna Hills go all the way back to a land grant issued in the 1800s before the founding of the State of California. However, official incorporation didn’t happen until the early 1990s. Events and attractions available to visitors and residents include Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, the Tall Ships Festival, the Soka Performing Arts Center, the Festival of the Whales and Aliso Beach County State Park.
Blue Buoy Family Swim School is based a short drive northwest of Laguna Hills in the City of Tustin. For more than half a century, the residents of Orange County have turned to us for quality swim instruction that never forgets the importance of fun and safety. Generations of swimmers have graduated from our programs and begun a lifetime of recreational or competitive swimming. Today, our list of former students includes multiple Olympians, as well as several world record holders.
