In addition to improving physical coordination and body confidence, they improve cognitive brain function, boost language skills, and improve social interactions among age peers. Adults can also benefit greatly from lessons, whether they’re first-timers or seasoned swimmers working on their technique or learning new strokes. However, in order to gain the advantages of swimming instruction, both children and adults must receive training from dedicated, experienced teachers who know how to convey their expertise in a safe, inviting environment.

In the City of Tustin and throughout Orange County, the number one name in swimming instruction is Blue Buoy Family Swim School. For five decades, our teachers have helped generations of the region’s children and adults gain basic swimming mastery and the many additional perks of top-quality training. With our varied class offerings, fully qualified instructors, superior facilities and flexible scheduling, we’ll have you and your family swimming like fishes at a price you can afford.

Class Offerings

Parent & Me Classes – Swimming lessons are often scary for young children, not to mention the parents of young children! We help take the stress out of the situation for you and your children under the age of three with these joint classes. During each lesson, you join your child in the water and directly share the experience as his or her skills develop over time.

The small-scale setting of these popular courses also gives participating children the chance to develop close camaraderie and learn from each other. Each semi-private session has student-to-instructor ratio of 2:1.

All of our private classes are one-to-one instructional sessions. You may choose this option for any one of a number of reasons. For example, children with special abilities often do best when they receive exclusive attention from an instructor. That’s also true for children with very specific goals in mind, such as learning how to perform certain techniques for competition or meeting the requirements for a Scout badge.

Stroke Prep Classes – Our stroke prep classes are designed for school-age children wishing to develop skill in each of the four swim strokes performed in competition (the freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). All participants must be at ease in the pool; in addition, they must have some prior exposure to a minimum of two of the four strokes. These classes have a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio and serve as an introduction to the more rigorous Stroke Technique classes.

Stroke Technique Classes – Our stroke technique classes are for school-age students who complete a stroke prep class, or have otherwise developed skill in all four competitive strokes. These lessons have two main goals: refining the techniques needed to perform each competitive stroke and gaining the physical conditioning required to support proper swimming form. Each 30-minute class maintains a 15:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Adult Swim Classes – You can learn to swim at any age, no matter your past experiences. In our adult classes, we foster an inviting environment that provides basic instruction but never forgets to let you have fun. You’ll have the added comfort of learning with other adults getting their feet wet for the first time.

Adults already familiar with the basics of swimming sometimes have a need for advanced instruction. We fill this need with separate adult classes geared toward individuals who can swim fairly well, but want to brush up on specific techniques for recreational or competitive purposes. Classes for beginning and advanced adults feature low student-to-instructor ratios and educational pacing and techniques tailored to the individual.

Dedicated, Experienced Swim Instructors

Each instructor is at least 19 years old, has demonstrated zeal for teaching, and undergoes thorough background checks before beginning employment. Our high staff retention means that your children can stick with the same preferred instructors throughout years of lessons.

Top-Notch Facilities

At our facilities in Tustin, we maintain two pools in optimal conditions at all times: a small, enclosed pool (with a depth of two to four feet) for our youngest swimmers and larger pool (with a depth of three to eight feet) for our older swimmers. The small pool provides an excellent environment for passing on foundational skills to toddlers and infants, while the large pool provides the space and depth needed for bigger bodies and a wide range of instructional  techniques. Throughout the year, we keep both pools at a relaxing 90 F to 93 F. We also keep the surrounding decks warm in the wintertime and cool in the summer.

Flexible Scheduling

When learning how to swim, it’s important to attend class regularly so that skills remain sharp and students can progress. However, we understand that today’s adults and children lead very busy lives, and it’s not always easy to find time to dedicate to swimming instruction. In line with this understanding, we offer flexible class scheduling for swimmers of all ages and abilities. We also maintain lenient absence policies that allow both children and adults to make up for missed lessons within a reasonable timeframe.

While the area wasn’t incorporated until the 1920’s, settlers first arrived in the late 1800s, and the Old Town district still contains well-preserved buildings from this earlier era. The 78,000-plus residents of Tustin maintain one of America’s highest per capita populations of sole proprietorships and start-up companies, and the city often ranks among the country’s top residential communities. Local attractions include Marconi Automotive Museum, the Tustin Museum, Tustin Market Place and Enderle Center.

Blue Buoy Family Swim School is proud to call Tustin home. Since 1956, we’ve taught the city and all of Orange County how to swim in a safe, monitored environment that encourages a spirit of fun and exploration. Over the years our alumni have gone on to every walk of life, including competitive swimming. In fact, we count multiple world record holders and Olympians among our many former students. Whether you or your children want to swim competitively or just gain basic competence and confidence in the water, our experienced staff will help you every step of the way.
